Shop Local, Shop Hatteras this Holiday Season

Shop Local Hatteras Island

Who wouldn’t love a little piece of Hatteras Island waiting under the Christmas tree? Enter our 48 hour Giveaway for a chance to win an autographed copy of the first two books in the Lighthouse Kids series, a Daniel Pullen Photography print, and a REAL watersports striped canvas beach tote!

The Adventures of the Lighthouse Kids

Far more than just a book for kids, the Lighthouse Kids series is a fantastic way to experience the history of Hatteras Island through the adventures of the grandchildren of the lighthouse keeper. From the Barnes and Noble website:

“Living in the shadow of the mighty Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, miles from the village, Ellie, Luke, and Blake exist in a world of spirits, mystical wolves, and stories told by their grandfather, the keeper of the lighthouse. In this five-volume series, the three children of the Jennette family travel back in time to discover the origin of their ancestors and the events that shaped the civilization of Cape Hatteras Island. Throughout the series, islanders live as they did when only an occasional mail boat kept them connected to the rest of the world—before a bridge linked the island to the mainland and before tourists flocked to the area during the summer season. Isolated from others, they created a life of comfort and community. In each subsequent volume, the Lighthouse Kids meet the people and experience the events that gradually transformed Cape Hatteras to the popular area it is today.”

The books can be found through Buxton Village Books, Barnes and Noble, Amazon and the Lighthouse Kids website where you can learn more about the author, Jeannette Gray Finnegan, Jr Torok, a 10th generation Hatteras Islander. Truly a great gift for anyone (not just children) with a sense of adventure and an interest in Hatteras Island.

Pea Island Art Gallery – A Hidden Treasure in Salvo

Take a stroll along the new pedestrian path that winds through the tri-villages of Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo, and you’ll likely happen upon the Pea Island Art Gallery. The building, at the southern end of Salvo, is a beautiful wooden replica of the Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station. Colorful flowers and native plants run wild out front. Make your way to the front doors to the sound of  bell sculptures moving in the breeze.

Over 100 local and regional artists are represented within the walls of the gallery, but make no mistake about it, the bar for quality is high and the pieces are carefully curated. From beautifully framed classically painted original oils to hand crafted jewelry – so many styles are represented and equally as many price ranges. Whether you’re looking for a gift to take home to your house-sitter, or the focal piece for your living room – you can find it at the Pea Island Art Gallery.

The Southern Living Community Cookbook – Celebrating Food & Fellowshop in the American South by Sheri Castle

Southern food and food stories are bound together. This book will reflect people, regardless of where they come form, who claim Southern food as their own, whether for a lifetime or a mealtime. People feel deep affection for their local community cookbooks, especially those well-worn volumes that serve as a timestamp of a particular place and time. No other type of recipe collection is more generous, gracious, and welcoming. Before we give you a bite, we Southern cooks have to tell you about what we’ve made. Southern food is evocative, so our food and food stories are bound together in our communities. A memorable Southern cookbook holds good food and a good read, the equivalent of a brimming recipe box plus the scribbled notes and whispered secrets that cover the tips, advice, and stories that a generous cook shares with family members, friends, and neighbors. These recipes bring all sorts of cooks, recipes, and stories to a common table to bring readers a cookbook filled with good things to eat that have something to say.

Good Dog True Stories of Love, Loss and Loyalty – A collection of stories from David DiBenedetto and the editors of Garden & Gun

Garden & Gun magazine’s aptly named Good Dog column is one of the publication’s most popular features. Now editor in chief David DiBenedetto and the editors of Garden & Gun have gathered their favorite essays as well as original pieces for this must-read collection of dog ownership, companionship, and kinship.
By turns humorous, inspirational, and poignant, Good Dog offers beautifully crafted stories from such notable writers as P. J. O’Rourke, Jon Meacham, and Roy Blount, Jr. From the troublemakers who can’t be fenced in to the lifelong companions who never leave our sides, this one-of-a-kind anthology showcases man’s best friend through all of his mostendearing (and maddening) attributes.

The Ultimate Guide to Sea GlassFinding, Collecting, Identifying and Using the Ocean’s Most Beautiful Stones by Mary Beth Bueke

As the owner of one of the world’s most elaborate sea glass collections, Mary Beth Beuke gets to talk about these prized ocean gems on a daily basis. Unfortunately, with each passing day, sea glass becomes more and more difficult to find, making the hunt more of a challenge to the seeker–especially one with limited experience in sea glass hunting.
There are several reasons why the hunt is so important to the sea glass seeker. Some find their Zen moments in the solitude and beauty of the hunt. Some collect to add color to their life. The history, mystery, and discovery of sea glass are also strong forces that draw collectors to shorelines around the world, looking for these pieces of physically and chemically weathered frosted glass.
Whatever your reason for wanting to learn about and start your own collection of sea glass, the window for doing so is closing as pieces are becoming more elusive due to a growth in sea glass popularity and a decrease in recent glass bottle production.
In “The Ultimate Guide to Sea Glass,” Beuke provides information that will help first-time seekers start new collections and veteran hunters learn more about their current sets. Beuke shares her experiences in gathering her own collection via photographs of vibrant and rare pieces, as well.

Celebrate the Kentucky Derby in Style with Kinnakeet Clay and Tanoshii Workshops

derbydecorationparty

We may not have horse racing here on Hatteras Island but we won’t let that stop us from celebrating the equine event of the South. Nothing says Kentucky Derby like beautiful horses, mint juleps and hats! Over-the top, fancy, beautifully embellished derby hats. If you don’t have one – don’t fear – just join the Derby Hat Decorating party over at Tanoshii workshops at Kinnakeet Clay Works – Studio & Showroom. This Thursday from 5 – 7 bring a simple hat and they’ll provide the materials, tools and skillful ideas for embellishing your one-of-a-kind eye catching derby hat.

Part of the new class and workshop series, Melissa Symolon of Tanoshii workshops is offering classes in a variety of art and craft in her studio just above the shop. Tucked beneath live oaks off of the soundside North End Road in Avon, at the new Kinnakeet Clay location you can learn pottery techniques from master craftsmen, or take an evening watercolor class from a local watercolor artist. Summer will bring music and outdoor art classes on the big wraparound porch for island locals and visitors of all ages. Besides the Derby Hat Party, upcoming courses include creating your own wind catcher, paper quilling, and nautical knots (where you’ll learn age-old knot-tying skills you’ll need to fashion jewelry, decorative housewares and more).

Whichever class you choose to take, you’ll leave with an authentic piece of art and a reminder of a very special Hatteras Island vacation.
