Cape Hatteras Named #4 Best Beach in the U.S. by Dr. Beach

Cape Hatteras was named the 4th best beach in the US for 2010 by Dr. Beach! Up from #7 on the list in 2009 and #8 on the list in 2008, Cape Hatteras is an excellent place for beachcombing and fishing.

The Top 10 list is compiled each year by the coastal expert Dr. Stephen Leatherman, director of Florida International University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research knows as “Dr. Beach.” He uses 50 criteria to measure the beach quality. Some of these include sand and water conditions, cleanliness, wildlife, weather, safety, views, and amenities.

1.Coopers Beach in Southampton, New York
2.Siesta Beach in Sarasota, Florida
3.Coronado Beach in San Diego, California
4.Cape Hatteras in the Outer Banks of North Carolina
5.Main Beach in East Hampton, New York
6.Kahanamoku Beach in Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii
7.Coast Guard Beach in Cape Cod, Massachusetts
8.Beachwalker Park in Kiawah Island, South Carolina
9.Hamoa Beach in Maui, Hawaii
10.Cape Florida State Park in Key Biscayne, Florida

Project to Build Paved Pathways on Hatteras Island

The Dare County Board of Commissioners approved a grant application to fund 7.9 miles of scenic byway. The National Scenic Byways grant is for $1,959,999 and will fund paved pathways in Avon and the tri-villages of Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo. This will become part of the Outer Banks Scenic Byway, highlighting historic village centers, as well as offering a safer route along Highway 12 for runners, walkers and bicyclists. The community has really showed support for this project, from Surf or Sound Realty and other local businesses, to individuals and property owners from 11 states, all making contributions to help fund the off-the-road pathways.

Outer Banks and Hatteras Island second home real estate markets featured in USA Today

The second home real estate market on the Outer Banks was featured in a February 25th USA Today article, which heralded the beach communities as peaceful and underdeveloped.

“The Outer Banks have long attracted visitors who march to a slightly different drummer, from the pirate Blackbeard to pioneering aviators Orville and Wilbur Wright to modern-day second-home owners miles from the nearest road,” reports author Larry Olmsted. “You don’t have to be a rebel to love these barrier islands off North Carolina, but a flair for escapism helps.” Continue reading

Bodie Island restoration project is underway

The Bodie Island Lighthouse, located in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore just north of the Bonner Bridge, is getting a much needed and long awaited facelift.

The $2.8 million project to restore and refurbish the lighthouse got underway late last year and is expected to take about 18 months. Continue reading

Buxton Local carving out a name for himself in national surfing contest

Hatteras Island is buzzing about 20-year-old Buxton resident Brett Barley, a local surfer who is making pretty big waves in the surfing world. Currently competing in the Volcom Pipeline Pro contest that is being held in O’ahu, Hawaii’s North Shore, Narley has advanced through three heats to earn a spot in the semifinals.

The third round, fourth round and quarterfinals were completed yesterday in treacherous wave-face heights of 15 to 25 feet at the Banzai Pipeline. Continue reading

Hatteras and the Outer Banks recognized as the #1 Marlin Fishing locale in the US

Marlin Magazine recently posted a top ten list of the best marlin fishing in the United States, and while the top locales ranged from California to the Florida Keys, it was Hatteras and the Outer Banks that nabbed the #1 position, making it the best marlin fishing spot in America. The Outer Banks Scenic Byway received national status on Friday as one of America’s Byways®, placing NC Highway 12 on the map, so to speak, for its fascinating coastal heritage and unique natural landscapes, making the leg of the historic two-lane highway from Nags Head, NC to Down East a perfect autumn drive for exploring the beauty of the barrier islands and connecting with the coastal communities that set the destination apart.
