Possible Suspensions or Delays on Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry Route

Below is information provided to us by the NCDOT today regarding possible suspensions or delays on the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry route. Please use the contact information at the end of the press release below if you are planning to travel this ferry route over the next few weeks.

RALEIGH — Travelers using the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry route could encounter delays, load weight restrictions and possible suspensions due to extreme shoaling of the Hatteras Inlet channel for the immediate future.

A threat of severe weather when a cold front moves through Tuesday, wind-driven tides and the narrow channel situation has created a safety issue that requires constant monitoring by the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division.

The inlet was side-cast dredged back in May to address an immediate need and is slated to be pipeline dredged in several weeks by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

“Visitors to our area need to be apprised of the situation,” stressed Deputy Ferry Director Jed Dixon. He is calling upon local residents, businesses, restaurants, motels and vacation home rental agencies to assist in spreading the word.

Because of the shoaling issue, the Ferry Division today is running only its smaller Hatteras Class boats, which draw less water and are easier to maneuver in the shallow passage.

For up-to-date status on the situation at Hatteras, travelers can sign-up to receive messages on Twitter by going to www.twitter.com/ncdot_ferry or call the Hatteras terminal at 252-986-2353 for updates.

Let the moon be your guide…

this Friday night! Purchase your tickets for the second Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Full Moon Tour of the month!
Tickets should to be purchased in person at the lighthouse ticket booth in Buxton between 8:15am and 5:40pm. Tickets are $7 for adults and $3.50 for children. Be sure to bring your flashlight for the climb.

Did you know that the month of August boasts two full moons? The first full moon (Full Sturgeon Moon) fell on the very first day of the month and the second full moon falls on this Friday, the very last day of the month. Friday’s full moon is known as the Full Red Moon, an Algonquin name.
Many people know of the second full moon in a month as the Blue Moon, which only occurs approximately every 2.5 years or “once in a blue moon,” and therefore is not to be confused with August’s Full Red Moon. The blue moon obtained it’s name due to it’s blue tint when seen through atmospheric layers of smoke or volcanic dust.

In case you didn’t catch the first full moon of the month, August is proud to bring you another, so be sure to bask it’s it glory (at the top of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse)!

Let a Professional Photographer Capture Your Beach Vacation

Most everyone comes on vacation with good intentions of capturing every memorable moment on camera during their long awaited vacation to Hatteras Island. What happens once everyone settles into their “home” for the week? People start to relax and mesh into their surroundings and before you know it, “We haven’t taken any pictures!” This is when your wife, who is usually the face behind the camera, exclaims that she has hired a professional photographer this year!
Professional photography is a growing trend among vacationers, according to Good Morning America. People would like to have their vacation captured in the correct “light,” so to speak. “People want to create the illusion that they’re having the perfect vacation or the perfect life and a professional photographer is certainly going to help you do that,” says Genevieve Shaw Brown of ABC News.

As an expression of our appreciation, Surf or Sound offers a complimentary portrait session and one 8X10 color portrait. Beach portrait sessions are however, based upon availability and the spaces fill up quickly. If you’d like to schedule a session, be sure to contact Mike Bayley Photography at least one week prior to your family’s scheduled arrival. This complimentary offer is also available to all family members and friends vacationing with you on Hatteras Island at no charge.
Another great professional photographer to check out is Hatteras Island local, Daniel Pullen.
While vacationing you should be able to relax and soak up each and every moment. Hire a professional photographer to capture those moments with a clear, crisp image to last you a lifetime!

Lowcountry Boil…It's what's for dinner!

It’s a warm summer night, you’re surrounded by a multitude of friends and family, and everyone is ready to eat! What could you possibly prepare that would not only feed, but satisfy the large group of people you are entertaining, while still allowing you to enjoy their company?
How about a Lowcountry boil?
Originally called Frogmore Stew, this one-pot wonder, was the result of National Guardsman, Richard Gay needing to feed a group of 100 hungry soldiers. Gay used his family’s recipe, which was later named by the soldiers after Gay’s hometown of Frogmore, South Carolina.
A Lowcountry boil consists of a few simple, yet superb ingredients…shrimp, sausage, potatoes, and corn-on-the-cob. Nontraditional Lowcountry boil items can also be added, such as clams and crab legs.
Grab a stockpot and get started! While the pot is boiling, be sure to set your table with newspaper (to cover your table top), cocktail sauce, and melted butter set aside for dipping.
Lowcountry Boil
4 pounds small red potatoes
5 quarts water
1 (3-ounce) bag of crab boil seasoning
4 tablespoons Old Bay seasoning
2 pounds kielbasa or hot smoked link sausage, cut into 1-inch pieces
6 ears of corn, halved
4 pounds large fresh shrimp (peeled and deveined optional)
Add potatoes to large pot and then add 5 quarts water and seasonings. Cover pot and heat to a rolling boil; cook 5 minutes. Add sausage and corn, and return to a boil. Cook 10 minutes or until potatoes are tender.
Add shrimp to stockpot; cook 3 to 4 minutes or until shrimp turn pink. Drain. Serve with cocktail sauce.
Serves 12

**The rule of thumb is the larger the crowd, the larger the pot!
***If you are staying in the tri-villages, head on over to Austin’s South Island Seafood in Rodanthe for delicious fresh shrimp or Risky Business Seafood on the south end of the island. There are a few produce stands located along Hwy 12, as well for hand selecting the perfect ears of corn for your feast.
ENJOY!
