Control Group Authorizes Unrestricted Access to Hatteras Island at 4:00 p.m.
The Dare County Control Group has authorized unrestricted Access to Hatteras Island effective today at 4:00 p.m. At that time, all residents, non-resident property owners, and visitors will be allowed unrestricted access to all of Hatteras Island including the Villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras.
In close coordination with NCDOT and other officials, the Dare County Control Group has been working to restore full access to Hatteras Island as quickly as possible. While there are some homes and businesses dealing with serious issues caused by Hurricane Arthur, it has been determined that the general level of conditions and infrastructure services available on Hatteras Island will be able to support unrestricted access as of 4:00 p.m. today.
NCDOT advises that there are pockets of sand and water remaining on Highway 12 in Hatteras Island. They have also established a single lane condition at the temporary bridge north of Rodanthe. This lane closure is controlled by a portable traffic signal, which may lead to some delays in this area. Motorists are urged to use extra caution.
For those Traveling to Ocracoke Island
Those traveling through Hatteras Island in order to gain access to Ocracoke Island should be aware that Hyde County may have reentry restrictions in place. Ocracoke information is available on the Hyde County website www.hydecountync.gov
