Celebrate a joyful island holiday with a variety of upcoming community events

The holidays are just around the corner, and on Hatteras Island, ’tis the season to celebrate with friends and family with a variety of upcoming community events. If you’re in the Outer Banks area, check out these festive activities that are open to everyone, and get a jump start on generating a little holiday spirit.

Community Christmas Dinner in tri-villages is Dec. 5
The Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Civic Association will sponsor a Community Christmas Dinner on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m. at the Community Building. Beautifully decorated by volunteers, the Community Building will come alive with singing and a visit from Santa. Turkey and ham are provided by the Community Building board and attendees are asked to bring a side dish or dessert.

December’s Really Really Free Market with a holiday theme
The Kinnakeet Civic Association’s December Really Really Free Market will be on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the Avon Fire Station. Come by to exchange goods, services, crafts, ideas, and anything else you can think of – the sky is the limit, so long as it’s free.

This month’s focus will be on decorations and gently used toys, books, and other “gift-able” items for this holiday season. As you are putting up your tree and find extra items to donate, please bring them to share with the community. To make arrangements for donated items to be picked up, please call Jenn Augustson at 995-3855. All leftover items will be donated to local thrift stores.

Breakfast with Santa is Dec. 5
Breakfast with Santa, a fundraiser for Hatteras Community Preschool, will be Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Hatteras Civic Center. There will be two sittings, 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. Tickets are $5 for children (under 2 are free) Adults are $8. Tickets are for sale at the Hatteras Library, Fessenden Center, and at the door on the day of the event.

‘A Christmas Muse’ music program will be Dec. 6
Local songstress Leslie Buck invites everyone to “A Christmas Muse” — joyous and tranquil songs, lilt in Leslie’s very own unique way. The program is on Sunday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. at the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Building. It is free and open to all.

Buxton Village Books annual party will be Dec. 9
Buxton Village Books will have its annual Christmas party on Wednesday, Dec. 9, from 5 until 8 p.m. There will be heavy hors d’oeuvres, music by the Frisco Jubilee, and, of course, Santa Claus.

The annual Hatteras Village Christmas Parade and dance will ring in the season on Saturday, Dec. 12, in Hatteras village. This annual event is sponsored by the Hatteras Village Civic Association, and features floats, music, and participants from all along the Outer Banks.
