Hatteras Island photographer Daniel Pullen will open a joint art show with Stephanie Kiker on Oct. 3 at Roanoke Island Festival Park in the Art Gallery. Pullen’s photography is featured in Surf or Sound Realty’s website and vacation home catalog, and he works with Surf or Sound rental guests on family portraits and special event photo sessions. The exhibition has a celebratory feel and island flavor. It will appeal to lovers of the Outer Banks and its waves, wildlife, and underlying ebb and flow. Expect a mix of photography, drawings and paintings. The show is open Oct. 3-28. The public is invited to the opening reception on Sunday, Oct. 4 from 4-6 p.m. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. It is free and open to the public.
Pullen is an eclectic artist bringing creativity to photography as well as painting. His surf art, painted on a variety of surfaces from mural-sized walls to hand-sized boards, is hip, bold and graphic. Stand with your back to the world and watch the sea. On good surf days the waves form breathtaking curls that remain etched in the mind’s eye. Every day is different. The sun and sea conditions color the water a variety of hues. Waves can unfold in glorious greens, blues, grays and gold’s as Daniel Pullen preserves them in his art.
Pullen’s art compliments the work of Kiker who has developed what she calls an aboriginal style using colored pencils to express stylized nature. Colorful patterns and black outlines make Kiker’s and Pullen’s work pop. Their compositions flow, paying homage to the natural elements that affect and inspire the duo.
Pullen has lived on Hatteras Island for more than 30 years. His photography has been published locally and internationally in journals, magazines and newspapers. Kiker is a graphic and fine artist who also works in pastel to create realistic images of the flora and fauna on Hatteras Island where she has been living for more than two decades. She graduated from the School of Design at North Carolina State University and is responsible for creating a widely distributed brochure featuring the galleries of the Outer Banks.
