The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has announced that N.C. Highway 12 will reopen no later than Tuesday, October 11.

NCDOT has been working since Hurricane Irene to restore the road following damage that compromised portions of Highway 12 north of Rodanthe. The project’s Resident Engineer, Pablo Hernandez, has stated, “Our hope is to open before then, but right now we are confident work will be complete on or before the 11th.” He added, “We will open the road earlier if we can.”

Once Highway 12 is reopened by NCDOT, there will be no travel restrictions for any portion of Hatteras Island, including Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras Village. With the reopening of Highway 12, residents and visitors will be permitted entry to the previously restricted villages of Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo.

It is recommended that visitors contact their accommodations provider to confirm the availability of their lodging reservation. Please email our vacation specialists at rent@surforsound.com or call 800-237-1138.
