The Fessenden Center in Buxton has launched a new walking program for islanders, visitors, and homeowners alike to stay fit while enjoying the off-season beauty of Hatteras Island.
Fessenden staff will lead participants who want to stay fit and enjoy the quiet scenery of the island landscape on walks throughout the winter. The “Walk through Winter” program is scheduled three times a week, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1:00 p.m. until about 2:00 p.m. from Dec. 1 through March 20.
The groups will walk for 45 minutes or less, and the leisurely stroll is not a competition. Walkers are encouraged to travel at their own pace and for the length of time they choose.
On some days, the group may walk to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and depending on the weather, the group might just walk in the center’s gym. Fessenden Center organizers say the walks will be casual events, “sometimes calling for tea and hot cocoa” after the stroll. Walkers will be encouraged to log their walks in a journal to keep a record of their commitment to fitness, and the interesting sights they might encounter along the way.
There is no charge for the program, and everyone is invited to participate. For more information, call 475-5650.
