The 2010 Outer Banks Wedding Expo was one of the biggest and best yet

On Sunday, January 10, Surf or Sound Realty representatives welcomed hundreds of soon-to-be brides and grooms and their families at the 2010 Outer Banks Wedding Expo at the First Flight Middle School in Kill Devil Hills. The 2010 expo was one of the biggest yet, with more than 100 vendors ranging from caterers to wedding planners, photographers to musicians, all offering visiting brides a taste of the Outer Banks wedding experience. Torpedo Junction – Shipwrecks of WWI and WWII Presentation to be held at Salvo Volunteer Fire Station

The National Park Service Outer Banks Group Know Your Park citizen science program series continues with a presentation from Joe Hoyt from the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary on Wednesday, January 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the Salvo Volunteer Fire Station. Free Market in Avon gives locals and visitors alike a fun, free way to come together

The mood was festive at the Avon Fire House on Saturday, Dec. 5, as several dozen local families drifted in and out of the building, browsing tables of gently used items and clothes, and stopping to talk to other families or maybe decorate an ornament or two.
The gathering was another of the Kinnakeet Civic Association’s Really Really Free Markets, a monthly event that encourages everyone and anyone to drop off or pick up items ranging from kitchenware to coats, children’s toys to crafts. Attendees can even exchange services, lessons, ideas, or just conversations – anything is fair game, so long as money doesn’t change hands. Continue reading

Hatteras Christmas Parade a Sunny Success

The annual Hatteras Village Christmas Parade started with a slight chill in the air on December 11th, but the sun poked out long enough for participants and parade go-ers to have a festive, fun time.

Onlookers lined the parade route along Highway 12 from Teach’s Lair Marina to the Hatterasman Drive-In. Thirty-nine units were part of the 2009 parade, led by Dare County Sheriff Rodney Midgett. Continue reading

Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station to perform first winter Breeches Buoy Drill

The Coast Guard and Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station have invited the public to attend a free, filmed performance of the Breeches Buoy Drill at the station scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Dec, 14th.

The drill, which is normally performed weekly from June through August, will be performed for the first time in December, so the production company Dream Quest can film it for an upcoming History Channel documentary entitled “Rescue Men.” Continue reading

The holidays are just around the corner, and on Hatteras Island, ’tis the season to celebrate with friends and family with a variety of upcoming community events. If you’re in the Outer Banks area, check out these festive activities that are open to everyone, and get a jump start on generating a little holiday spirit.

Community Christmas Dinner in tri-villages is Dec. 5
The Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Civic Association will sponsor a Community Christmas Dinner on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m. at the Community Building. Beautifully decorated by volunteers, the Community Building will come alive with singing and a visit from Santa. Turkey and ham are provided by the Community Building board and attendees are asked to bring a side dish or dessert.

Hatteras village Christmas parade will be Saturday, Dec. 12

The annual Hatteras Village Christmas Parade and dance will ring in the season on Saturday, Dec. 12, in Hatteras village. This annual event is sponsored by the Hatteras Village Civic Association, and features floats, music, and participants from all along the Outer Banks.

Hatteras Island Farmer’s Market will be November 24th

If you’re spending Thanksgiving on Hatteras Island and want to bring a local touch to the table, then check out the Coastal Harvester’s first annual Farmer’s Market on Tuesday, November 24th, 10 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
