Celebrate the Kentucky Derby in Style with Kinnakeet Clay and Tanoshii Workshops

derbydecorationparty

We may not have horse racing here on Hatteras Island but we won’t let that stop us from celebrating the equine event of the South. Nothing says Kentucky Derby like beautiful horses, mint juleps and hats! Over-the top, fancy, beautifully embellished derby hats. If you don’t have one – don’t fear – just join the Derby Hat Decorating party over at Tanoshii workshops at Kinnakeet Clay Works – Studio & Showroom. This Thursday from 5 – 7 bring a simple hat and they’ll provide the materials, tools and skillful ideas for embellishing your one-of-a-kind eye catching derby hat.

Part of the new class and workshop series, Melissa Symolon of Tanoshii workshops is offering classes in a variety of art and craft in her studio just above the shop. Tucked beneath live oaks off of the soundside North End Road in Avon, at the new Kinnakeet Clay location you can learn pottery techniques from master craftsmen, or take an evening watercolor class from a local watercolor artist. Summer will bring music and outdoor art classes on the big wraparound porch for island locals and visitors of all ages. Besides the Derby Hat Party, upcoming courses include creating your own wind catcher, paper quilling, and nautical knots (where you’ll learn age-old knot-tying skills you’ll need to fashion jewelry, decorative housewares and more).

Whichever class you choose to take, you’ll leave with an authentic piece of art and a reminder of a very special Hatteras Island vacation.
