Project to Build Paved Pathways on Hatteras Island
The Dare County Board of Commissioners approved a grant application to fund 7.9 miles of scenic byway. The National Scenic Byways grant is for $1,959,999 and will fund paved pathways in Avon and the tri-villages of Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo. This will become part of the Outer Banks Scenic Byway, highlighting historic village centers, as well as offering a safer route along Highway 12 for runners, walkers and bicyclists. The community has really showed support for this project, from Surf or Sound Realty and other local businesses, to individuals and property owners from 11 states, all making contributions to help fund the off-the-road pathways.
