Hatteras Island Anglers Set To Participate In The 28th Annual Pirate's Cove Billfish Tournament

Fishing, fun and friends – that’s what the Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournament is all about! The 28th annual event is set to take place August 15th through August 19th in Manteo.

This world class event is shaping up to be another spectacular tournament for anglers! Top prize money is a whopping $850,000 based on 120 entries. A lot of anglers set out with hopes to break the 1,228.5 lb. State Record Blue Marlin caught during the 25th Anniversary of the tournament!

The weekend leading up to the tournament is all about the ladies! The 22nd Annual Alice Kelly Tournament will be held August 14th. The tournament doubles as a fund raiser for the Outer Banks Support Cancer Group. With an entry fee of $500 per boat, it is a great way to have fun and help out our community!

The 28th Annual Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournament will undoubtedly be a week of fishing, entertainment and activities to be shared with friends to create lasting memories on the Outer Banks. Local charter boat takes top prize money in Hatteras Village Offshore Open

The Hatteras charter boat Gambler, captained by Steve Garrett, took the top prize money in the 16th annual Hatteras Village Offshore Open Fishing Tournament. Fishing days were from Wednesday, May 12, through Saturday, May 15.

Just before noon on the last day of fishing, Gambler boated and brought to the dock the largest blue marlin for this year’s tournament, a 530-pounder caught by angler Wayne Wray. Continue reading

Hatteras and the Outer Banks recognized as the #1 Marlin Fishing locale in the US

Marlin Magazine recently posted a top ten list of the best marlin fishing in the United States, and while the top locales ranged from California to the Florida Keys, it was Hatteras and the Outer Banks that nabbed the #1 position, making it the best marlin fishing spot in America. Blue Marlin Blitz – Charter Fishing in the Gulf Stream

During the 25th Annual Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournament, on The Outer Banks of North Carolina, held August 11 – 15, 2008, a North Carolina state record was broken when Florida resident Trey Irvine landed the largest blue marlin in the state’s history, weighing in at a whopping 1,228.50 pounds. This smashes the previous record weight of a 1,142-pounder caught in 1974.

While the record catch received the bulk of the attention, the majority of anglers did well during the tournament, landing a total of 23 blue marlin, 59 white marlin, 20 sailfish and one spearfish.
The recent tournament, and its’ blue marlin star, brings to national attention a fact that frequent visitors and locals already knew: Hatteras Island is Marlin Country. Continue reading
