Author asks for local help to tell the story of changing lives on the coast

Author and North Carolina State professor Tim Hatcher is requesting help from locals and longtime visitors alike on telling the story of Hatteras Island life.

He is working on a new book about people who have worked and lived along the North Carolina coast and how their lives have changed over the decades. Hatcher is writing the book because, he says, “A way of living, working and raising a family has changed for the people who have deep roots in the sands of the North Carolina coast. People who have for a long time called the coast their home have a story to tell about the way life used to be. It’s that story that needs to be told”. Continue reading

Children’s Book Week is May 11-17

The Dare County Library is celebrating National Children’s Book Week from May 11-17 with fun programs for children of all ages.

The regular preschool story times this week will be a special “Teddy Bear Days.” Story time children are invited to bring their favorite teddy bear with them to story time – cute or cuddly, fat or funny, big or little, old or new. There will be a teddy bear picnic, a teddy bear parade and plenty of teddy bear fun.Preschool story times at the Hatteras Library are on Tuesdays for 3-5 year olds from 11 until 11:30 a.m.

Also during this week, a special “American Girl Tea Party” will be held at the Hatteras Village Library. School-age girls can come dressed as their favorite American Girl and/or bring their own American Girl doll. Continue reading

Gee Gee's Review of “The Story of Edgar Sawtelle” by David Wroblewski.

If you haven’t yet read “The Story of Edgar Sawtelle” go do that right now. Then come back and be overjoyed that author Wroblewski has announced the book will be part of a trilogy.

“Edgar” is a deeply affecting story of a family in Wisconsin farm country that breeds dogs. The Sawtelles are dogs bred for personality, not conformation or hunting talent or show. Continue reading
