Behind the Scenes: Capturing a day on Hatteras Island

Photographer Ryan Moser Captures the Hatteras Island Sunrise

Photographer Ryan Moser Captures the Hatteras Island Sunrise

When given the opportunity to fill two beautiful full-color pages of Outer Banks This Week’s summer magazine – we knew right away what to do – feature our charming island to give people a glimpse into a day in the life of a Hatteras Island vacation.

But how could we possibly show the depth of character of the island and include all that there is to do on a vacation here in just a day? All we could do was try – and so we ventured out one beautiful June morning to do our best to capture one real life Hatteras Island vacation day from dawn until dusk. Click here to take a look at the magazine spread! (page 12-13)

If you’ve been here, you might guess that we came back with more footage than we could ever fit in the space – and we barely scratched the surface as far as all you can do here!

Hatteras Island’s villages are full of real people and authentic places each with a unique and incredible story. Talk with someone long enough you’ll find that each story gives way to a dozen more. That’s the beauty of it – you can come down every year for 50 years and discover something new each time.

Take a look at some of the images we couldn’t fit between the pages, below:

Underwater Camera Found From Hatteras Island Vacation

Nine months ago, Zach Wilson was paddleboarding near Rodanthe on Hatteras Island and lost his GoPro camera. As fate would have it, a vacationer found the scratched case during a walk on the beach in Avon just last week. “I had no clue what it was. I just thought it came from a boat or something because of the suction device that was on the waterproof case,” Rick Spink, of Virginia Beach said.

The cover was protecting a damaged camera that held a photo card with nearly 1,000 pictures of a paddle-board rider. Spink sent one of the images to REAL Watersports. The Hatteras Island surf shop put the photo on its Facebook page.

A friend contacted Zach and told him to check REAL Water Sports Facebook page as he was 99 percent sure it was pictures of him on his stand-up paddle board. Zach Wilson identified his photo and contacted Spink. The camera is now in the mail and on its way to Zach in Canada.

You never know what treasure you will find on the beach during a Hatteras Island vacation!

Bill Introduced to Help Beach Access at Cape Hatteras

In response to the National Park Service Final Rule that has new restrictions and guidelines for accessing the beaches of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina Congressman Walter B. Jones has introduced H.R. 4094. This legislation would restore reasonable pedestrian and motorized access to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreational Area. The bill would overturn a final rule implemented by the National Park Service (NPS) two weeks ago, as well as the 2008 U.S. District court approved Consent Decree.

If you support this bill H.R. 4094, contact your state representatives and urge them to support it as well. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore belongs to everyone, no matter what state you are in, and your voice matters.

“The federal government needs to remember that Cape Hatteras was established to be a recreational area for the American people,” said Congressman Jones. “But taxpayers can’t recreate without access to the beach. The goal of management ought to be a balanced approach between visitor access and species protection. The Final Rule falls short of that goal. The Interim Strategy comes much closer to hitting the target.”

As part of the Final Rule, beach driving permits are required to drive on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. For information on the permit costs and related park service rules, visit Cape Hatteras Beach Driving Permits.

H.R. 4094 would reinstitute the Park Service’s 2007 Interim Management Strategy (IMS) to govern visitor access and species protection in the Recreational Area. The Interim Strategy was backed up by a 113-page Biological Opinion issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service which found that it would not jeopardize the species of concern, namely piping plover and sea turtles. H.R. 4094 has been referred to the House Natural Resources Committee for further consideration.
