Today we are celebrating ORV access to Cape Point, one of the most treasured locales on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore!
The designated ORV route is currently open from 7am to 9pm daily, starting 0.4 miles north of Ramp 43 to Ramp 44 and south to Cape Point.
Permits are required for ORV access on the beaches of Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

As the weather cools down and Hatteras Island beaches become deserted, a seasonal visitor begins to make an appearance along the Outer Banks coastline: harbor seals.
From January through March, seal sightings are not uncommon on any of the island’s beaches. Taking a break from the rough waves and tricky ocean conditions, the seals literally hurl themselves onto the beach for a little R&R before returning back into the ocean. Their stay on the sand can last anywhere from an hour to a few days, depending on how much rest they need. Continue reading
Never mind that it’s winter – the bite goes on along the Carolina coast, and on Hatteras Island particularly, many anglers attest that the fall fishing has never been better.
The top spots are Oregon Inlet just north of Rodanthe, Cape Point in Buxton, and Hatteras Inlet. But no matter what stretch of beach, inshore or offshore, many fishermen are heading home happy, with their coolers full. Continue reading

While summertime visitors are treated to the laughing gulls, mole crabs, and other coastal critters that enjoy Hatteras Island when it’s warm, winter visitors have an opportunity to observe some of the more timid and elusive Hatteras Island residents. When the beaches and coastal areas are deserted, and when the weather is chilly enough for these cold natured animals to thrive, an unusual group of island critters make a dramatic appearance. Who says the Fall season is slow? This past week, Hatteras Island was the place to be with a multitude of events going on, including the birdwatchers’ Wings Over Water Festival, the Outer Banks Marathon, and perhaps most importantly, the annual Cape Hatteras Anglers Club Fishing Tournament. The tournament, held every November since 1958, carried on as planed despite a couple of very rainy days, and by judging day on Saturday, the weather was simply perfect.
In the summer, it seems like every other vehicle on NC Highway 12 has a bike rack strapped to the back, and there’s a good reason for this phenomenon. With a collection of smaller neighborhoods, paths, flat beaches, and miles of scenic highway, Hatteras Island can be a biker’s dream.
New to the local cycle scene? Exploring is an easy way to find the best routes, but there are a few scenic spots up and down the island that are ideal for long, easy bike rides.
From kayaking to kiteboarding, the island was made for those who just can’t stay out of the wind or water. It’s no wonder that thousands of people flock to the island from all over the world for its exceptional weather and water conditions, both on and off the beaches.
New to the island sporting scene? Then pick a sport, grab some gear, and get ready for a little exercise. Remember that equipment and lessons are available up and down the island at renowned local surf and sport shops, like Kitty Hawk Kites, REAL Kiteboarding, Avon Surf Shop, and Hatteras Island Board Sports.
