United States Coast Guard Search and Rescue Demonstration

On Monday, October 8th at 11am, you are invited to become a spectator at a dramatic, awe-inspiring U.S. Coast Guard Helicopter Search and Rescue Demonstration, right here on Hatteras Island. This impressive demonstration will be performed on the Chicamacomico beach in Rodanthe at milepost 39.5, by U.S. Coast Guard Motor Lifeboat Station Oregon Inlet and the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City. Come watch as these remarkable men and women carry out this exciting demonstration using a 47 ft. motor lifeboat, accompanied by a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter.
Tickets are $5 and include a self-guided tour of the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Historic Site and Museum.

A Little "Chili" in Chicamacomico

There is just something about a cool, crisp September day that makes you long for all of the comforts of Fall…including a warm, satisfying bowl of chili.

On Saturday, September 15th, you’ll have a chance to participate in the 15th Annual Chicamacomico Banks Fire and Rescue Chili Cook-off at the Cape Hatteras KOA in Rodanthe. Tantalize those taste buds with the best chili this side of the Oregon Inlet Bridge, starting at 2pm! Hamburgers, hot dogs, and homemade desserts will also be available.

Enjoy an afternoon of good food, good music, and good fun, while supporting Chicamacomico Banks Fire and Rescue!
Festivities start at noon.

On Friday evening, Sept. 14, there will be a cook’s meeting, registration, pig-pickin’, and live music by Mojo Collins from 4 until 8 p.m.

Movie based on Pea Island “Rescue Men” Premieres

On February 27th, 7:30 p.m., the Indoor Theater at Roanoke Island Festival Park will host the Outer Banks debut of the documentary film Rescue Men, The Story of the Pea Island Life Savers. The movie, which is produced and directed by Los Angeles based DreamQuest Productions, has been in the works for several years and tells the story of one particular brave Hatteras Island life saving crew. Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station to perform first winter Breeches Buoy Drill

The Coast Guard and Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station have invited the public to attend a free, filmed performance of the Breeches Buoy Drill at the station scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Dec, 14th.

The drill, which is normally performed weekly from June through August, will be performed for the first time in December, so the production company Dream Quest can film it for an upcoming History Channel documentary entitled “Rescue Men.” Continue reading

Chicamacomico’s American Heroes Day will be celebrated August 6th

The Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Museum Complex will be holding its Fourth Annual “American Heroes Day” on Thursday, August 6, 2008 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The complex is located in the village of Rodanthe on Hatteras Island, MP 39.5 on Hwy. 12. Continue reading
