Frisco Native American Museum participates in Museum Day 2012


Celebrate a day of learning in the heart of Frisco, NC on Saturday, September 29th! Frisco Native American Museum is proud to join Smithsonian magazine in celebrating the 8th Annual Museum Day! On this day, selected museums and cultural institutions open their doors free of charge to Smithsonian magazine readers and Smithsonian.com visitors.

The Museum Day admission card has been printed in the September 2012 issue of Smithsonian magazine and a downloadable version is also available on Smithsonian.com. The card must be presented in order to enter free of charge at participating museums and cultural institutions.

Spend the day browsing interesting exhibits at the Frisco Native American Museum, then hit the nature trail at the museum to experience and enjoy the maritime forest.

If you’re unable to make it to Frisco on Saturday, be sure to stop by on your next trip the island. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30am to 5pm. Visit them on the web at or call (252)995-4440 for more information.

12th annual Powwow in Frisco will include living history events

The nature trail at the Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Center will once again echo with the haunting music of drums when the 12th annual Inter-Tribal Powwow, Journey Home, takes place on Saturday and Sunday, April 24 and 25. the event is a weekend of music, dancing, storytelling, demonstrations, crafts, native food, and much more. Wings over Water Wildlife Festival runs from Nov. 3-8

The 13th annual Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival, a celebration of wildlife and wild lands in Eastern North Carolina, will run from Tuesday, Nov. 3, until Sunday, Nov. 8. Frisco Museum offering pine-needle basket workshop

Creating baskets from natural materials is one of the oldest known crafts. Pine basketry dates back more than 9,000 years, before crafters were making pottery. For Hatteras Island Native Americans, pine needle baskets served many utilitarian and decorative purposes, and over the years, the creation of pine needle baskets has developed into an intricate and beautiful art form.

Hatteras Island Attractions

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

One of the most famous and recognizable in the world because of its black and white candy cane stripes, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is a definite “must see” on every Hatteras Island vacation.
The lighthouse is located in Buxton and is open for climbing in the summer season for a small fee. At 208 feet, the steep narrow climb is not for the faint of heart. There is also a visitor’s center and gift shop, nearby nature trails, and a wooded picnic area.

A Day Trip to Ocracoke

Ocracoke Island is south of Hatteras Island and is accessed from Hatteras Village by a free ferry that leaves Hatteras Landing. The ferries depart hourly from 5 a.m. until midnight, and every half hour on heavy traffic days. Call (252) 986-2353 for more information on the Hatteras / Ocracoke ferry.
The village of Ocracoke is a small community, just 4 square miles in diameter. The Ocracoke lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse still in operation in America. You can park and stroll around the locally owned shops and restaurants and catch a sparkling sunset over Silver Lake Harbor. Continue reading
