What Are Your Top Five Things To Do On Hatteras Island?

We all know that there are so many wonderful things to do here on Hatteras Island. Our pristine, family-friendly beaches and quaint villages offer a variety of activities for you and your family to enjoy while visiting us.

The Huffington Post recently listed its top “5 Free Things to do on Hatteras Island.” It is no surprise that spending time enjoying the beaches of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore is top on the list. There is nothing quite like a day at the beach for exploring, relaxing, and playing in the surf!

The Huffington Post list also includes: a trip to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum where admission is free, although donations are encouraged; attending programs offered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge; visiting Cape Hatteras and Bodie Island Lighthouses (there is a fee to climb them, but not to walk around the grounds); and taking a free ferry ride from Hatteras to Ocracoke Island for the day.

We would love to hear what you and your family like to do while visiting us! What are your Top 5 Things to do on Hatteras Island? Please share them with us on our Surf or Sound Facebook and Twitter pages, and follow us on Pinterest to see of few of ours!

Coming Soon to a Village Near You! Hatteras Island Ocean Center

Exciting plans are underway to open the first phase of the Hatteras Island Ocean Center this Spring in the former Beacon Shops located on NC Hwy 12 in Hatteras Village. The first phase of this multi-year project includes an interactive information and education center, as well as wetland trails for exploring the unique ecology of Hatteras Island. This series of noninvasive trails will lead to a launching area for kayaks and paddleboards at trail’s end.

The Ocean Center headquarters will house exhibits on the varied components of Hatteras Island’s ecosystem. These interactive exhibits will focus on marine life, shipwrecks, weather, shellfish, salt marsh ecology, and of course, sea turtles! As you enter the Center, a “larger than life” screen will display the underwater photography of local artist, Russell Blackwood. Next, head to the exhibit on sea turtles which will include a machine that simulates x-rays and probes, allowing visitors to learn about the biology of sea turtles while making the connection between sea turtle maladies and the environment’s impact. In addition to playing “Sea Turtle Veterinarian,” visitors will have an opportunity to learn about nesting habits and rehabilitation procedures for the sea turtles of Hatteras Island. From there, visitors can explore a fishing exhibit set up in conjunction with the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum and Captain Ernie Foster of the Albatross Fleet. This exhibit will focus mainly on charter and commercial fishing, with the addition of beach and pier fishing in the future. As you make your way back around to the entrance, take a minute to check out the interactive whiteboard with daily updates on weather, tides, and island happenings. If you’d like to enjoy a Hatteras Island Ocean Center souvenir, choose from a few Ocean Center choice goods and be on your way to explore the wetland trails!

The second phase of the Hatteras Island Ocean Center will include a state-of-the-art pier and pier house located on NC Hwy 12 in the same vicinity as the former General Mitchell Motel in Hatteras Village. The pier house is expected to include a restaurant, other food vendors, a covered playground, an arcade, a public bathhouse, tackle shop, equipment rental, indoor and outdoor exhibits, classrooms, research areas, and a wildlife rehabilitation area. This phase is still in the very beginning stages as funding is being pursued.

Stay tuned for updates and make plans to stop by the Hatteras Island Ocean Center on your next visit to Hatteras Island! Visit www.hioceancenter.org or follow them on Facebook

Graveyard 100 Ultramarathon set for March 9th

The best endurance runners in the world will be on the Outer Banks March 9th for the Graveyard 100 Ultramarathon. The Graveyard 100 is two races: 100 miles point-to-point or 100k point-to-point. Yes, you read that correctly: 100 miles!

A portion of all entry fees will be donated to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum to further the preservation, advancement and presentation of the maritime history and shipwrecks of the North Carolina Outer Banks.

The 100 mile run extends the length of the Outer Banks and is 100.7 miles point-to-point starting “where the road begins” and highway 12 starts at the edge of the sand in Corolla. Runners will then travel south the entire length of the paved highway on Bodie Island and the entire length of paved highway on Hatteras Island, viewing much of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore via historic Hwy 12. Runners will end at the “end of the road” on Hatteras Island adjacent to the Ocracoke Island Ferry and directly in front of the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum.

100 mile finishers will receive Gold finishers’ belt buckles, a Silver (under 24 hour) belt buckle or a special silver champion’s buckle.

The 100k course starts at Hargrove St. public beach access on South Old Oregon Inlet Rd. at 3pm, is 63 miles long and has a 20 hour cutoff. 100k runners will follow the remainder of the 100 mile route through Bodie Island Lighthouse park, over Bonner Bridge, down Hatteras Island, through Hatteras Island Lighthouse park, finishing at the “end of the road” on Hatteras Island adjacent to the Ocracoke Island Ferry and directly in front of the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum.

100k finishers will receive finishers’ medals or a special silver champion’s medal.

This year’s marathon includes runners from 25 states and 3 countries. The runners traveling the greatest distance are David Bayley and Traviss Wilcox from Great Britain. The average age of the 2013 participants is 42, with 68 being the oldest and 21 being the youngest.

For more information about the event, visit www.graveyard100.com. If you would like to volunteer, please email brandon@graveyard100.com

We welcome all of the runners and their friends and families to Hatteras Island in the beautiful Outer Banks of North Carolina, where more than 1000 ships are recorded to have sunk off the coast.

Everyone at Surf or Sound Realty wishes the best of luck to all of the runners! See you at the finish line!

Arrr you Arrrmed with pirate lingo? International Talk Like A Pirate Day

Shiver me timbers! Today marks the 10th Anniversay of International Talk Like a Pirate Day! It’s only fitting that we acknowledge Blackbeard’s stint in the waters off of Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands by amusing ourselves and our friends by talking like a pirate instead of ye ol’ landlubber!

On June 6, 1995, friends John Baur (Ol’ Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap’n Slappy) began using pirate lingo while playing a game of racquetball and were having so much fun that they then decided to parlay this phenomenon into a new world holiday. The date Sept. 19 was chosen because it was Mark’s ex-wife’s birthday, and the only date that came to mind at the time, besides Christmas and Superbowl Sunday, which were obviously already taken.

The first seven Talk Like a Pirate Days were celebrated amongst Ol’ Chumbucket and Cap’n Slappy and their closest friends. The two friends soon realized it would be a great idea to spread the word of this fine day and make it official. National humor columnist, Dave Barry, received word of the holiday and paid homage to it in a 2002 column. Avast! Talk Like a Pirate Day started gaining international appeal!

HOW TO TALK LIKE A PIRATE
Check out this list of terms and phrases and be sure to partake in International Talk Like a Pirate Day!
Ahoy!- “Hello”
Avast!- Stop and give attention or used as a sense of surprise. “No way!”
Aye- “Yes, I agree.”
Arr!- There are many meanings such as, “Yes.” “I agree.” “I’m happy.” “I’m enjoying…”
Shiver me timbers!- An exclamation of surprise, as when a ship hits something causing everything to shake.
Heave ho!- “Give it some muscle and push it!”
Thar she blows!- Signifies a whale sighting.
Shipshape- “Cleaned up and under control.”
Touch and go- Refers to briefly running aground, or two ships coming aboard to transfer mail or passengers, both risky propositions.
Pipe down- Most 18th century ships had a lights-out rule, indicated when the bosun’s pipe sounded. Even pirate ships had a set time when those who were not on watch were expected to go to bed.
Mind your Ps and Qs- Refers to tavern keepers who would extend credit to sailors and would keep track of how many pints or quarts of ale their customers consumed.
Batten down the hatches- Saying used to let everyone aboard know to put everything away on the ship and to tie everything down because a storm is brewing.

Now, that ye ol’ pirate vocabulary is in shipshape, go out there and spread the word of this fun-filled holiday!
