Graveyard of the Atlantic Summer Programs

AHOY MATEY! The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras is offering a plethora of weekly summer programs and activities for all ages! It would be a pity to miss out on this amazing opportunity to explore and discover more about our maritime heritage.
Here’s a list of programs that you may be interested in attending…
Monday-Saturday 1st Mates Program
-For ages 8-12. Children will receive a certificate of rank and 1st mate’s wristband by doing a Museum search and attending two programs, or doing a Museum search, attending one program, and completing one written activity.
Monday and Fridays
Maritime Movies @ 11am and 2pm
-These shows include information about the U-85, Chicamacomico, the Alligator, the Battle of the Atlantic and more!
Tuesdays @ 2
-A speaker’s series on the people and events that shape our island’s history.
Wednesdays
Island Treasures @ 11am
-Talks and demonstrations related to or island’s heritage.

-Visit with a local decoy maker, Sam Green, as he demonstrates the art of creating various decoys.

OBX Events June 16-24th

What is there to do on the OBX besides spending time on the water with sand between your toes? Although the Atlantic Ocean and our beaches are the main attraction, the OBX has a calendar full of events for all ages to enjoy!

June 16 & 23 Fish Fry, Hatteras Village and Avon Village, 5-7pm.

Graveyard 100 Ultra Marathon Set for March 10th

The best endurance runners in the world will be on the Outer Banks March 10th for the Graveyard 100 Ultra Marathon. The Graveyard 100 is two races: 100 miles point-to-point or 100k point-to-point. Yes, you read that correctly: 100 miles.

A portion of all entry fees will be donated to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum to further the preservation, advancement and presentation of the maritime history and shipwrecks of the North Carolina Outer Banks

The 100 mile run extends the length of the Outer Banks and is 102.2 miles point-to-point starting “where the road begins,” and highway 12 starts at the edge of the sand in Corolla. Runners will then travel south the entire length of the paved highway on Bodie Island and the entire length of paved highway on Hatteras Island, viewing much of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore via historic Hwy 12. Runners will end at the “end of the road” on Hatteras Island adjacent to the Ocracoke Island Ferry and directly in front of the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum.

Friends and family waiting for runners to finish will be treated to special guided tours at the museum.

The 100k course starts at aid station 2 at 4pm from Bodie Island Light House, is 63 miles long and has a 19 hour cutoff. 100k runners will take a quick spur north of the lighthouse on Hwy 12 then turn and follow 100 mile runners across the 2.5 mile long Bonner Bridge spanning the Oregon Inlet between Bodie Island and Hatteras Island around sunset. The rest of the course will be identical to the 100 mile runners finishing at the “end of the road” on Hatteras Island adjacent to the Ocracoke Island Ferry and directly in front of the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum.

So far for the 2012 Graveyard 100, runners from 23 states and 3 countries are participating. The runner traveling the greatest distance to run is Al Harman from Vancouver, BC. 87% of registrants are running the 100 mile and 13% are running the 100k. The oldest runner who has signed up to participate is Louis Joline, age 79 from Lake Tapawingo, MO. The youngest runners are Karsten Olsen, from Wilton, CT and Spencer Williams from Hudson, MA, both 20 years old. The average age of the runners is 41.

The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum Is Decking Its Halls for a Holiday at the Museum

The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is inviting everyone to a free Open House Saturday, December 10th from noon to 4pm. They have been busy decorating and are anxiously waiting to show off their festive spirit!

If you bring a donation for the food bank, you will receive a 5% discount in the Meekins Chandlery Gift Shop and each shopper will be given a special holiday bag.

When you stroll through the holiday village, you will be delighted by the vintage Santa Claus displays, and your eyes will sparkle at the sight of twinkling lights and ornamented trees. The animatronic dog and bear is sure to cause laughter to erupt from young and old!

Caroling and children’s activities will be held in the education wing. Open the doors to the Burrus Couch Midgett Gallery and learn Hatteras Island history by viewing: the “Flags Over Hatteras” Civil War exhibit with pieces assembled from collections around the nation; the “Pirates, Scalawags, and Brigands” display with actual artifacts from Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge shipwreck; recognize some familiar names and faces and learn about the cultural implications of shipwrecks in “Ship Ashore” ; and even view actual pieces from the dining room table of the U.S.S. Monitor.

Enjoy a variety of hot soups and holiday cookies for free! All events and exhibits are free and are appropriate for all ages.

Flags Over Hatteras – Civil War Sesquicentennial on Hatteras Island and Events for the Week of Aug. 20-Aug.27

Surf or Sound Realty is a proud sponsor of the “Flags Over Hatteras” Sesquicentennial Event on Hatteras Island, happening August 22nd through August 28th.

This 150th anniversary will commemorate the events that occurred on Hatteras Island in August of 1861.

While visiting Hatteras Island, make sure you stop by the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum and check out the Civil War Exhibit! The special exhibit “Flags Over Hatteras” is open to the public and free of charge.

Here are the detailst:

Exhibit open’s August 22, 2011 – July 31, 2012
Museum Hours: April – October
Monday – Saturday 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
November – March
Monday – Friday 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

This exhibit will feature items and documents spanning from across our country that is related to Eastern North Carolina activities and actions during 1861. The exhibit is focused around the Battle of Fort Hatteras and Fort Clark, Aug. 28-29,1861 and will also explore “The Capture of the Fanny” and “The Chicamacomico Races” in October of the same year.

Three events are scheduled throughout the week:
1. The Blue-Gray Reunion – August 22-August 24, 2011
2. The Civil War Conference – August 25-August 27, 2011
3. Living History Programs – August 27-August 28, 2011

The Blue-Gray Reunion is by invitation only to descendants of soldiers who participated in the battles from August-October, 1861. It’s a great way to meet the ancestors of the soldiers. Descendents will be sharing stories, photos, journals, etc. Lots of activities are planned and speakers and Civil War music will be provided. There is no charge or fee for this event but they do require you to register by mail or email here.

The Civil War Conference will feature three nationally known authors and historians: James McPherson, Ed Bearss and Craig Symonds. Stick around after dinner and listen to one of them give their talk each evening at the Hatteras Village Civic Center in Hatteras. Attendance is open to the public, but limited to about 250 attendees. The registration fee is $175 which includes 3 dinners, 3 nationally known speakers, refreshments, additional speakers and power point presentations, Civil War exhibits, collections, ‘Living History’ programs, Civil War music and ‘Monument Dedication’.

Living History Programs are scheduled to be held at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Saturday, August 27th from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Sunday, August 28, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The programs will feature re-enactors of the regiments involved in the action at Hatteras Inlet in August of 1861. The re-enactors will present artillery demonstrations, encampments, drills and period music. In addition, a civil war era’ Ladies Fashion’ show will be presented as well as a Civil War era Battery forge. These programs are free of charge and are open to the public.

Wednesday Aug 24
Night Lights
Time: 8:30pm to 9:30pm. Location: Pre-register at Hatteras Island Visitor Center at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. -Join a ranger for a short walk to search the tide line for glowing marine plankton and the sky for planets and constellations. Find out why protecting the dark is valuable to both people and wildlife.

Thursday Aug 25
Night Climb
Time: 8pm and 9pm. Location: Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. -Enjoy a guided tour of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. ..at NIGHT! You will need to pre-purchase Night Climb tickets in person between 8:15 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. at the lighthouse ticket booth Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday on the week you intend to climb. Each program is limited to 30 participants and tickets are sold on a first come, first served basis. Tickets are non-refundable and children must be at least 42″ tall. Bring a flashlight!

Beach Apparatus Drill
The U.S. Life-Saving Service required all stations to practice this rescue method weekly. Chicamacomico is now one of only two places in the country– and the ONLY one to be performed by active-duty US Coast Guard personnel–that performs the complete Drill. It is recommended to arrive by 1:30.

Time: 5:00pm to 5:30pm. Location: Hatteras Island Visitor Center at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. -Countless ships have met their end off the Outer Banks. Learn how storms, shoals, war, and commerce have contributed to the wreckage, and hear stories of those who risked their lives to save the victims.

Explore the Shore: Beach Walk
Time: 8:00am to 9:00am. Location: Old Lighthouse site parking lot
Enjoy an early morning ranger-led walk across the undeveloped ocean beaches of Hatteras Island. Learn about this changing shoreline and the plants and animals that make this dynamic environment their home.

Cast Netting
Time: 9:30am. Location: Pre-register at the Hatteras Island Museum at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. -Casting a net from shore is one of the oldest methods of fishing. Give it a try or just come to observe the action. You’re welcome to bring your own cast net. Wear wading shoes. Limited to 25 participants.

Seashore Arts
Time: 11:00am to 11:30am. Location: Hatteras Island Visitor Center at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. -Get in touch with your artistic side and create a lasting memory of the seashore! Bring a cotton t-shirt or pillow case to create a seashore-inspired masterpiece. Limited to 16 participants.

Coast Guard Station Tour
Time: 3:30pm to 4:30pm. Location: Pre-register at Hatteras Island Visitor Center at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. -The U.S. Coast Guard and its predecessor, the U.S. Life-Saving Service, have a long and heroic history on the Outer Banks. Sign up today and enjoy a unique tour of an active U.S. Coast Guard Station. Limited to 20 participants.

Pea Island Family Canoe Tour
10am – 12 noon. Designed especially for kids and others who want to explore the marshes, islands, and creeks of Pamlico Sound via New Inlet. This tour includes hands-on exploration. Celebrating Father's Day On Hatteras Island

Hatteras Island is a great place to celebrate Father’s Day! There are plenty of sights, attractions and activities to share with the number one guy in your life – Dad!

A great way to create lasting memories with Dad is by taking him fishing! Hatteras Island is know for its fantastic fishing. Whether you want to hop on a boat, hang out on the shore or take in the beautiful views, Hatteras Island offers a complete and unique fishing experience.

Corolla Shipwreck Treasure

The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras houses the shipwreck washed on the Corolla shore in December of 2009 that experts believe to be possibly the oldest shipwreck on the East Coast. According to Joseph Schwarzer, the director of the North Carolina Maritime Museums, this shipwreck is definitely the oldest shipwreck for North Carolina.

The treasure hunter Ray Midgett and his friend Rodger Harris started investigating the mystery of this shipwreck about 10 years ago without believing they would ever see it. After the shipwreck revealed itself ashore, Midgett and Harris found a Louis the XIII French Coin on the timber of the ship, a priceless treasure to them.

This 17th century ship sunk about 400 years ago. Schwarzer noted that the ship was made with wooden pegs or trunnels, which is an ancient technique of ship building. The archeological conservators are working hard to try and preserve the ship from further decay. This is surely a North Carolina treasure that is worth a visit!

Visit the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum

One of the must do things on Hatteras Island is a trip to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum which holds some of America’s most important maritime history. The museum preserves Outer Banks maritime history and shipwrecks from the earliest periods of exploration and colonization to the present day.

The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is a public, non-profit, educational institution and it is part of the North Carolina Maritime Museum System within the State History Museums, Division of Archives and History, Department of Cultural Resources. The museum preserves, researches, exhibits and interprets its collections for the benefit of the general public and specialized audiences. British and Canadian World War II heroes honored in Outer Banks ceremonies

In ceremonies this week, communities on the Outer Banks will pay honor to World War II British and Canadian sailors who gave their lives to defend the coast of the United States.

The British War Grave ceremonies take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 6, at the World War II British Cemetery in Buxton, and again at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 7, at the World War II British Cemetery in Ocracoke. Receptions follow both events at 1 p.m. The ceremonies honor the 63 foreign sailors who lost their lives just off the coast of the Outer Banks during World War II, when German U-Boats hugged the coast of Hatteras Island.

Scientists scour 'Graveyard of the Atlantic'

It’s called the graveyard of the Atlantic.

Sunken Navy ships and merchant vessels mingle with wildlife, remnants from what’s known as the Battle of the Atlantic during World War II.

“It’s pretty surprising to a lot of people that there were all these operations happening, literally within sight of shore,” said Joe Hoyt, the principal investigator of a month-long research project on the battle. Continue reading →
