A Rare Glimpse into History – Sunken WWII Ships Found off the Coast of Cape Hatteras

Providing new insight into a relatively little-known chapter in American history, a team of researchers led by NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries has just discovered two significant vessels from World War II’s Battle of the Atlantic, 30 miles off the Cape Hatteras coast.

The attacked WWII merchant ship Bluefields and the German U-boat that attacked it only to be assailed by aircraft and escorts protecting the merchant ships were both found resting less than 240 yards apart on the ocean floor. It’s a rare window into a historic battle story and the underwater landscape of the battles of World War II.

These most recent findings are part of an ongoing Battle of the Atlantic, underwater archaeological field expedition on the remains of vessels from the Battle of the Atlantic in World War II. German, American British naval and merchant vessels lost in the Atlantic have been visited and studied by archaeologists, marine biologists and researchers. The UNC Coastal Studies Institute here on the Outer Banks, as well as NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, East Carolina University, Minerals Management Service, the National Park Service and the State of North Carolina have all collaborated on this mission that has been ongoing and making interesting discoveries since 2008.

Not just another day at sea…

On February 21, 1854, a 250-ton barkentine, Orline St. John, was dismasted in a strong gale off of Cape Hatteras. As heavy seas battered the large vessel and its crew, many people tried to seek refuge out of harms way. Concerned with their safety, several crew members tied themselves to the rigging in hopes of not being swept overboard. After the storm passed, the crew was left to fend for themselves for about 10 days before they were rescued. Unfortunately, four crew members did not return home.

Shipwrecks…UNCOVERED

It’s that time of year again! Days on end of a strong “blow”, as native islanders would call it, tends to expose treasures that have remained hidden from the salty elements for many years. Whether you are in search of miles of phenomenal shelling, a scattering of sea glass, or treasures washed ashore from shipwrecks of yore, the beaches of Hatteras Island are the place to be!

The waters that surround our barrier island are known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic due to the convergence of two strong ocean currents, the Labrador and the Gulf Stream, as well as the treacherous, ever-changing Diamond Shoals. Thousands of ill-fated boats and their crews are said to have been lost near Cape Hatteras. Other factors leading to the grim total of ships lost to sea were the Civil War, German submarine attacks, as well as pirate attacks.

Many shipwrecks have found their home on the sea floor but there are a few that have been laid to rest on our shores. These mysterious pieces of maritime history can occasionally be seen as the sand shifts to uncover these treasures.

Take some time to treasure hunt while you’re here and see if you can locate one or more of the following shipwrecks on Hatteras Island:

Oriental 1862
Located seven miles south of Oregon Inlet campground or 30 miles north of Buxton. Park at Pea Island Comfort Station. Wooden remains are occasionally exposed, as well as a wooden bow which is located on the beach 1 mile north.

Located off of Ramp #27 on the beach.

Altoona 1878
Turn down Lighthouse Road in Buxton. Follow the road 1.7 miles to its end in the gravel parking lot. Walk over the ramp to the beach, then south along the beach 1/2 miles and west 1/4 mile to the bow of the Altoona.

The Pocahontas
Look for the parking area on the east side of NC Hwy 12, just south of the last building on the south end of Salvo, and 4/10 mile south of mile marker 43. The visible part of the wreck can be seen in the surf at high or low tide, but more is visible during low tide.

Hatteras Village's connection to the Titanic

Hatteras Island and the Outer Banks have played a role in many history-making events, but this one might surprise you. Did you know that the first received and recorded distress message sent by the Titanic was received at the Hatteras Weather Bureau Station?

“CQD”, meaning “Come Quickly Distressed” (this was the code used prior to “SOS”), was the telegraph message sent by the RMS Titanic and received in Hatteras Village at 11:25pm on the night of April 14, 1912. Further details in the message included “Have struck iceberg”.

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, the log page recording of the telegraph message will be displayed for the first time at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras Village. The log page had been discovered in the walls of the weather station during the building’s renovation in 2005. The building is now being used by the park service and the Outer Banks Visitor’s Bureau as a welcome center.

Visit the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum

One of the must do things on Hatteras Island is a trip to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum which holds some of America’s most important maritime history. The museum preserves Outer Banks maritime history and shipwrecks from the earliest periods of exploration and colonization to the present day.

The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is a public, non-profit, educational institution and it is part of the North Carolina Maritime Museum System within the State History Museums, Division of Archives and History, Department of Cultural Resources. The museum preserves, researches, exhibits and interprets its collections for the benefit of the general public and specialized audiences. Corolla Shipwreck Has a New Home in Hatteras Museum

The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras village has received a very large artifact to add to its nautical collection. The remains of a shipwreck, perhaps the oldest in North Carolina, were moved 90 miles from the town of Corolla in the Outer Banks to its new home at the museum. The shipwreck was moved along Highway 12 in the middle of the night, when traffic was the lightest. Some onlookers stood along the side of the road, clapping, as the large truck hauling the shipwreck passed in the night.

The discovery was made in 2008, when tides and high winds exposed the shipwreck. The frame of the shipwreck was moved off the beach, closer to the Currituck Lighthouse in April of 2010 for protection from the sea.

People walking the beach near the shipwreck found coins and other artifacts that date back to the 17th century, the time of Louis XIII of France and Charles I of England.

The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum plans to lift the shipwreck with a specialized cradle and build a structure around three sides to protect it from the elements. Visitors will actually be able to watch as the archeologists progress with studying the shipwreck.

There is not a time frame for when this plan is to take effect, but the museum welcomes all visitors to see the shipwreck as it is now. The shipwreck is open to the public behind the museum building, resting peacefully in its new home in Hatteras village.

British and Canadian World War II heroes honored in Outer Banks ceremonies

In ceremonies this week, communities on the Outer Banks will pay honor to World War II British and Canadian sailors who gave their lives to defend the coast of the United States.

The British War Grave ceremonies take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 6, at the World War II British Cemetery in Buxton, and again at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 7, at the World War II British Cemetery in Ocracoke. Receptions follow both events at 1 p.m. The ceremonies honor the 63 foreign sailors who lost their lives just off the coast of the Outer Banks during World War II, when German U-Boats hugged the coast of Hatteras Island.
