Linda Browning will offer watercolor workshop

Linda Meyer Browning, award-winning watercolorist, photographer, and painting instructor, will be conducting a watercolor workshop for adults on Saturday, Sept. 12, and again on Monday, Sept. 14.

“Watercolor for Beginners” will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be held at Linda’s studio in Frisco on Hatteras Island.

Outdoor painting workshop set for May at SeaWorthy Gallery

SeaWorthy Gallery in Hatteras village will sponsor a three-day “Plein Air” outdoor painting workshop on May 19-21 from 9 until 4 p.m. each day. The workshop will focus on marshes, boats, beaches, cottages, and other coastal scenes. All media is welcome, but the demonstrations will be done in watercolor. Class size is limited, so the instructor can give personal attention to each student. A brief critique will conclude each painting day. Continue reading

Frisco Museum offering pine-needle basket workshop

Creating baskets from natural materials is one of the oldest known crafts. Pine basketry dates back more than 9,000 years, before crafters were making pottery. For Hatteras Island Native Americans, pine needle baskets served many utilitarian and decorative purposes, and over the years, the creation of pine needle baskets has developed into an intricate and beautiful art form.

Island Crafts: Putting those shells to good use

Visitors and locals alike have been known to rake in the shells after a good storm, or just when the tides are right. But once you have a bucket of shells to bring home, what do you do? Part of the reason for the popularity of seashells is that they are fabulous raw materials for craft projects. Young and old alike, everyone can enjoy a rainy afternoon sorting through their Outer Banks shells and creating a homemade souvenir that they can use as the perfect present, decorate a beach home, or simply enjoy as a fond memory of their trip to Hatteras Island.
