OBX Events July 14-22

As if spending your days on the beach aren’t enough, the OBX has many exciting events in store to keep you entertained!

~Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Paul Green recounts the historical events leading to the disappearance of the first English colonists who settled on Roanoke Island over 400 years ago. This is a production you don’t want to miss. Visit The Lost Colony for more info and tickets.

~The theme of this year’s celebration is “Giving Back, A Celebration of Community.” Come mingle and enjoy a free barbecue cookout, featuring live bluegrass and blues from Banjo Island. There will also be a silent auction.
The Carey LeSieur Foundation is a non-profit, charitable foundation that aims to promote compassion and humanity within the local community by celebrating posthumously the life of nurse practitioner Carey Marie LeSieur and encouraging our community to remember her caring dedication. The primary mission of the foundation is to provide financial assistance in the form of scholarships to students, both college and graduate, who are engaged in a course of study whose ultimate end point will be in a career in healthcare.

World OCEAN Day, June 8th

Let’s all join together and celebrate World Ocean Day on Friday, June 8th, right here on Cape Hatteras National Seashore!
First recognized in 2008 by the United Nations, World Ocean Day has been designated as a special day for people around the globe to celebrate the abundance of ocean resources.
A day of recognizing, exploring, and appreciating our ocean’s resources will be underway on June 8th!
Join in the following programs:
9:30 am Explore the Shore (1hr.)
~A free, ranger-led walk on our beaches to explore the everchanging shoreline and the plants and animals that call the seashore their home. Meet in the parking lot next to the Ocracoke campground.
11 am Sea Turtles for Kids (30 min.)
~Free, fun, interactive activities for kids to learn about this amazing creature who uses the shores of Cape Hatteras National Seashore as its nursery grounds. Meet @ the Hatteras Island Visitor Center Pavilion.
3 pm Sentinel of the Shore (30 min.)
~An opportunity to learn about the rich history of the Park’s lighthouses and find out what is in store for those majestic structures! Meet @ the Bodie Island Visitor Center.

U.S. Coast Guard Helicopter Search and Rescue Demonstration

After seeing the movie The Guardian a few years ago, have you become intrigued by the men and women who put their lives at risk everyday to perform Search and Rescue?
On Tuesday, May 29th at 11am, you are invited to become a spectator at a dramatic, awe-inspiring U.S. Coast Guard Helicopter Search and Rescue Demonstration, right here on Hatteras Island. This impressive demonstration will be performed on the Chicamacomico beach in Rodanthe at milepost 39.5, by U.S. Coast Guard Motor Lifeboat Station Oregon Inlet and the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City. Come watch as these remarkable men and women carry out this exciting demonstration using a 47 ft. motor lifeboat, accompanied by a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter.
This is an opportunity you will not want to miss! The Search and Rescue Demonstration will leave you on the edge of your beach chair seat!

Admission is FREE with the regular site admission of $6 for adults and $4 for Seniors 62+ and Youth 6-17. Please allow yourself time to park at the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station and Historic Museum, get tickets, and get to the Chicamacomico beach.

The 1st Annual Shorebreak 5K and Tide Pool Fun Run

On Monday, May 28th, you will have the opportunity to make history by partcipating in Hatteras Island’s 1st Annual Shorebreak 5k and Tide Pool Fun Run! Come one, come all!

Feel free to walk, jog, or sprint the 3.1 mile scenic loop through beautiful Kinnakeet Shores in Avon. The 5k will start at 8am at the Oceanfront Pavilion of the Beach Klub in Avon. The Tide Pool Fun Run will begin immediately following the Shorebreak 5k at 9am on the beach.

This event is a fundraiser for the Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund and the OBX GO FAR Children’s Health and Nutrition Program.

Registration is $35 and $25 for ages 18 and under. The fee includes a goody bag, t-shirt, medal, age group winner prizes, and a post-race party for adults 21 and older. The fee for the Tide Pool Fun Run is $10 and includes finisher medals and a t-shirt.
