British and Canadian World War II heroes honored in Outer Banks ceremonies

In ceremonies this week, communities on the Outer Banks will pay honor to World War II British and Canadian sailors who gave their lives to defend the coast of the United States.

The British War Grave ceremonies take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 6, at the World War II British Cemetery in Buxton, and again at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 7, at the World War II British Cemetery in Ocracoke. Receptions follow both events at 1 p.m. The ceremonies honor the 63 foreign sailors who lost their lives just off the coast of the Outer Banks during World War II, when German U-Boats hugged the coast of Hatteras Island.

Arts Council will host live music, art and food event on Monday, May 3rd

The Dare County Arts Council (DCAC) invites Hatteras Island residents and visitors to a lively evening of light fare, live music, art, a gorgeous sunset, and neighborly cheer on Monday, May 3, from 6 – 8 p.m., at The Inn on Pamlico Sound on NC Highway 12 in Buxton.

Local artists will show their work, and local musicians The Summertime Blues Band (with special guest musicians joining in), will perform. A number of local restaurants, including The Inn on Pamlico Sound, Rusty’s Surf and Turf, Avon Cafe, Island Perks, Mac Daddy’s and Teach’s Island Bar and Grill, will be on site cooking up some delicious local fair for all attendees to enjoy. Outdoor painting workshop set for May at SeaWorthy Gallery

SeaWorthy Gallery in Hatteras village will sponsor a three-day “Plein Air” outdoor painting workshop on May 19-21 from 9 until 4 p.m. each day. The workshop will focus on marshes, boats, beaches, cottages, and other coastal scenes. All media is welcome, but the demonstrations will be done in watercolor. Class size is limited, so the instructor can give personal attention to each student. A brief critique will conclude each painting day. Continue reading

National Park Service announces May Programs

During May, the National Park Service Outer Banks Group will be providing scheduled public programs for the pre-summer season at Wright Brothers National Memorial, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Children’s Book Week is May 11-17

The Dare County Library is celebrating National Children’s Book Week from May 11-17 with fun programs for children of all ages.

The regular preschool story times this week will be a special “Teddy Bear Days.” Story time children are invited to bring their favorite teddy bear with them to story time – cute or cuddly, fat or funny, big or little, old or new. There will be a teddy bear picnic, a teddy bear parade and plenty of teddy bear fun.Preschool story times at the Hatteras Library are on Tuesdays for 3-5 year olds from 11 until 11:30 a.m.

Also during this week, a special “American Girl Tea Party” will be held at the Hatteras Village Library. School-age girls can come dressed as their favorite American Girl and/or bring their own American Girl doll. Continue reading
