“Fee Free” Holiday Weekend at Wright Brothers National Memorial

Wright Brothers National Memorial will be joining national park sites across the country in celebrating the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday by waiving admission fees on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, January 14-16.

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced that the National Park Service will also waive admission fees on April 21-29 (National Park Week), June 9 (Get Outdoors Day), September 29 (National Public Lands Day), and November 10-12 (Veterans Day weekend). Park staff of the Outer Banks Group manage the parks for visitors who seek inspiration and rejuvenation from the natural wonders and rich cultural heritage of the area. Bring your family and friends to Wright Brothers National Memorial, the site of the first powered flight, and learn more about this great nation’s aviation history. Enjoy exploring the winter beaches of the nation’s first national seashore, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and visit the site of the first English settlement at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site.

“Winter can be a wonderful time to visit the national parks of the Outer Banks. During the winter months the smaller crowds, more relaxed pace, and sunny, cool days can provide wonderful opportunities for affordable family vacations close to home,” said Superintendent Mike Murray. “Fee free days are a great opportunity to discover a new season in your favorite national park.”

Entrance fees are not charged at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site or Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

NPS Offers Special Programs to Hatteras Island Kids

Young Naturalists

Hatteras Island is a great place to grow up–beaches, fishing, sea turtles, pirates, shipwrecks, surfing, and, yes, even hurricanes. As a special post-Irene Hatteras Island event, the National Park Service is offering all Hatteras Island kids and their families the opportunity to learn and experience more about this unique barrier island that they call home.

Designed for the children of Hatteras Island, the Especially for Hatteras Island Kids interactive programs are crafted to add to the island youths’ recognition of the many different natural and cultural resources and stories of our nation’s first national seashore.

Join a park ranger for Especially for Hatteras Island Kids programs Monday, September 12th through Friday, September 30th at 4 p.m. daily and additionally at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the pavilion on the grounds of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. All Especially for Hatteras Island Kids programs are free to Hatteras Island kids and their families!

Bodie Island restoration project is underway

The Bodie Island Lighthouse, located in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore just north of the Bonner Bridge, is getting a much needed and long awaited facelift.

The $2.8 million project to restore and refurbish the lighthouse got underway late last year and is expected to take about 18 months. Continue reading →

National Park Service Programs

Every year, the National Park Service (NPS) offers seasonal programs to assist visitors in exploring all the wonders of the national seashore, and to pick up a new found education and appreciation of Hatteras Island beaches along the way.
The activities are typically 1-2 hour sessions, and are available at a number of NPS centers, and local attractions, including the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Oregon Inlet fishing center, and the Hatteras Village Weather Station.
All of these programs are seasonal, typically running from the end of May until Labor Day weekend, and vary on location, dates and times, so it’s best to check out the NPS online calendar at http://www.nps.gov/caha/planyourvisit/events.htm or call (252) 473-2111 to find out about the programs available during your vacation.

Off the Road, and on the Beach

Basics of Beach Driving

Exploring the seashore from your 4WD vehicle, with your family and your beach gear comfortably along for the ride, can be a fun and convenient way to head to the beach.

Beach Driving is allowed via access ramps up and down the island, from the north side of Oregon Inlet, to Hatteras Village’s Pole Road, the most southern point of Hatteras Island. Look for the brown vehicle signs adjacent to public parking areas for off road ramp access, or visit the NPS website, http://www.nps.gov/caha/planyourvisit/off-road-vehicle-use.htm for a comprehensive map of ramps, as well as NPS rules, regulations and guidelines. The Park Service will occasionally restrict an access point, so keep an eye out for signs marking closures and please be respectful of them. Continue reading →
