British and Canadian World War II heroes honored in Outer Banks ceremonies

In ceremonies this week, communities on the Outer Banks will pay honor to World War II British and Canadian sailors who gave their lives to defend the coast of the United States.

The British War Grave ceremonies take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 6, at the World War II British Cemetery in Buxton, and again at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 7, at the World War II British Cemetery in Ocracoke. Receptions follow both events at 1 p.m. The ceremonies honor the 63 foreign sailors who lost their lives just off the coast of the Outer Banks during World War II, when German U-Boats hugged the coast of Hatteras Island.

Scientists scour 'Graveyard of the Atlantic'

It’s called the graveyard of the Atlantic.

Sunken Navy ships and merchant vessels mingle with wildlife, remnants from what’s known as the Battle of the Atlantic during World War II.

“It’s pretty surprising to a lot of people that there were all these operations happening, literally within sight of shore,” said Joe Hoyt, the principal investigator of a month-long research project on the battle. Continue reading

Discovering Shipwrecks on the Outer Banks

While your family explores the beaches during your Hatteras Island vacation, you might stumble across unusual structures sticking out of the sand or peeking out of the Atlantic Ocean. Large, old slabs of wood or chunks of partially submerged metal aren’t just beach debris, but are ancient remnants of shipwrecks, sometimes up to centuries old, that have been buried or deserted on the beach for generations. Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum offers free summer activities

Island quilting traditions, canvasback decoy construction, the Civil War on Hatteras Island, children’s crafts, stories by the sea, maritime heritage speakers and even a birthday party for Blackbeard are some of the free activities at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum (www.graveyardoftheatlantic.com) in Hatteras village for this summer.
