Outer Banks Fishing Report 11/3/08-Hatteras Island

A breezy week turned into a gorgeous weekend as the Northeast winds subsided long enough for anglers to hit the beaches in T-Shirts, and offshore boats to enjoy calm waters all the way to the Gulf Stream. Lots of fish were being reeled in from all over the Outer Banks, including lots of drum, blues, sea mullet, and even speckled trout around the jetties near the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.
We’re expecting a coastal storm over the next couple of days, but that just means the shelling is going to be great by the weekend, when the air temperatures are expected to reach almost 70 degrees. It’s certainly shaping up to be a good November. Continue reading →

Outer Banks Fishing Report 10/20/08- Hatteras Island

True to typical fall form, this past week on Hatteras Island started with a couple days of wild weather, followed by windy, but sunny days later on in the week. The big story this past week wasn’t just the weather, but also the drum which were being reeled in all over the island. This is in no small part thanks to the Annual Frank & Fran’s Red Drum Tournament, which was held over the weekend and attracted 300 anglers, despite the windy weather. With a total of 154 red drum registered and released, ranging from 18″ to the winning 49 ΒΌ”, it’s safe to say that the drum are keeping island anglers busy. Continue reading →

Fishing Report 10/20/08 Hatteras Island
We enjoyed a few record setting warm days early in the week, with no wind and gorgeous beach days, followed by a little coastal storm over the weekend to mix things up. This is an indication that fall has officially arrived. If you need further proof, the dunes are covered with yellow wildflowers (our version of fall foliage), and the drum have been reeled in from just about every beach and pier on the island.
With the storm out of the way, the rest of this upcoming week is shaping up to be more of the same – mild 65-70 degree weather, a little wind, not many people, and plenty of drum. You gotta love fall. Continue reading →

Outer Banks Fishing Report 10/6/08-Hatteras Island

What a gorgeous week for fishing. With mild air temperatures in the mid-to-high 70s, and postcard perfect weather, Hatteras Island anglers were treated to a much-deserved beautiful week. The stormy days we had a couple weeks ago brought in piles of shells from Rodanthe to Ocracoke all week long, so beachcombers were treated to a great week of exploring too.
The drum run continues on the island, and bluefish have been everywhere for the beach fishermen. The blues might not always be the biggest catch on the beach, but at least no one left the shore empty handed.

Outer Banks Fishing Report 9/29/08-Hatteras Island

It’s been a wild week with a Nor’easter putting a temporary halt on the fishing scene for a day or two, but the gorgeous weekend weather made up for a couple of stormy days.
With few people on the shore, except for on the island’s most popular beaches, weekend anglers got to enjoy the great weather and good fishing all to themselves. With a light breeze and cooler temperatures, (but still warm enough for shorts and sunscreen), it’s definitely starting to feel like fall. On Hatteras Island, this means three things: Good sales, good shells, and great fishing.
This past week, it was all about the drum, as almost every fishing spot on the island reported good drum catches. Look for the drum runs to continue this week, as the air and water temperatures remain consistent, and the weather stays nice and mild.

Get Ready for Fall Fishing

As the weather cools down on Hatteras Island, the fishing definitely heats up. Fall is known as one of the best seasons on the Outer Banks to land the big one as migrating species of fish maneuver their way along the Gulf Stream in search of new feeding spots. It’s the time when Sea Bass and Striped Bass, King Mackerel and Spanish Mackerel, Yellowfin Tuna and Dolphin, can all be found hovering off the North Carolina coast.
For most avid anglers, fall is particularly known as the season of the red drum run, and some of the largest red drum in the country have been caught right off the Hatteras Island coast.
If your casting finger gets itchy when the fall season arrives, remember that there’s still plenty of time to reserve a last minute fall vacation. During the shoulder season months of September and October, you’ll find plenty of businesses and restaurants still open, as well as exceptional rental homes that are available for last minute guests. Hatteras Island Fishing Basics

Hatteras Island attracts fishermen from around the world with its first class fishing. From the shoreline to 50 miles into the Atlantic Ocean, there are a multitude of ways to reel in the big one:

Charter Fishing: Just 15 miles from the Gulf Stream, the island is a perfect launching point for deep sea fishing trips. A fleet of charter boats leaves daily from both Hatteras Inlet and Oregon Inlet in search of landing the big one. Depending on the season, many boats come back full with a variety of fish, including dolphin, tuna, bluefish, wahoo, channel bass, Spanish and king mackerel, cobia, and blue and white marlins.

Call one of the numerous charter businesses along the island, (offering half day and full day trips), to schedule your Gulf Stream adventure. You can typically book a party of up to 6 people, or if there’s just one or two fishermen on the adventure, you can combine with another charter fishing party. Be sure you call well in advance, as charter fishing is popular and can book quickly. Continue reading →
