Talk Like a Pirate Day is Coming

One of the greatest holidays is upon us, and it’s one that all island locals and visitors should celebrate with gusto. No, it’s not Thanksgiving, Halloween, or even the inauguration of football season. In fact, there’s a chance that there are still a few folks out there who have never heard of this internationally recognized event.

It’s Talk Like a Pirate Day, and it’s Saturday, Sept. 19.

This is a time to celebrate, mates, and on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands where we’re no strangers to the legacy of pirates, it would be a disservice to our communities not to celebrate with enthusiasm. Continue reading

Say ARRRRRR! on September 19!

In Honor of International Talk Like a Pirate Day on September 19th, we’d like to share this pirate slang dictionary, developed by the inventors of the holiday.

In 1995, for reasons unknown to the inventors, they began talking in pirate slang during a game of racquetball, and decided to parlay this phenomenon into a new world holiday. The concept was picked up by national columnist Dave Barry who thought the idea was brilliant, and the holiday evolved into a national event.

Pirate Week on The Outer Banks September 15-20

Kick off your fall vacation with the annual Pirate Festival hosted by Kitty Hawk Kites in Nags Head. This week-long event begins on Monday, September 15th, with community events happening all week all over the Outer Banks.
Enjoy Pirate history, storytelling, reenactments, and shows. The culmination of a fun filled week of events will be on Saturday September 20th at the Kitty Hawk Kites Store, MP 12.5, Nags Head. Throughout the festival, Captain Jack Sparrow will make special guest appearances throughout the Outer Banks at various Kitty Hawk Kites stores. Continue reading
