Make Your Own Holiday Gifts At Indian Town Gallery!

It’s hard to believe the holidays are just around the corner! Time to start thinking about what gifts to give to our loved ones. Indian Town Gallery in Frisco is offering a unique experience and opportunity to make your own holiday gifts during one of their four classes being offered all day Wednesday, November 23rd.

Make your own Christmas Cards with Vicky Lowe. The class is from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Cost is $30 and materials are provided. Vicky will coach students to design and paint their own Christmas Card using watercolors. All skill levels are welcome!

Learn Glass Blowing with Phil Bickley. Classes are available all day November 23 and 24. They are half-an-hour long and cost $25. Make your own Christmas ornament or necklace pendant from scratch. Anyone would love to receive such a unique and thoughtful gift! Classes are taught outside and are dependent upon the weather.

Make Sea Glass Jewelry with Betty Kungle. Half hour classes run between 10:00am and noon. Cost is $15 per student and includes sea glass, wire and tools. You won’t believe how easy it is to wrap sea class and create a one of a kind gift!

Create a Sea Glass Necklace with Chris Cantwell. This advanced class is from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Cost is $30. Students can bring their own beach finds to create a unique sea glass necklace using beading and wrapping techniques. Designing is a big part of this class.

Surf or Sound Realty is Set to Sponsor the Outer Banks Marathon

Surf or Sound Realty Volunteers at the 2010 Outer Banks Marathon

Surf or Sound Realty is set to man Mile Marker 25 once again for the 6th Annual Outer Banks Marathon. It will be held November 13th with more than 5000 runners from all over the country and world running and walking the 26.2 mile stretch of beautiful scenery from Kitty Hawk to downtown Manteo on Roanoke Island.

Mile Marker 25 is near the finish line, and volunteers from Surf or Sound Realty, along with their friends and family, will encourage all of the runners and pass out water and Gatorade to the marathon participants. We have created signs with encouraging statements on them that we will post leading up to our station, and the signs will be paired will pink flamingos! You can rent 12 pink flamingos for a minimum donation of $25 and the funds go to Hatteras Island Meals. HI Meals is a non-profit organization staffed by volunteers that delivers a hot meal to nourish and enrich the lives of homebound and other people in need in every village on Hatteras Island.

The Outer Banks Marathon is one of the events organized by Outer Banks Sporting Events (OBSE). The mission of OBSE is to organize and promote sports competition and healthy living resources, provide financial resources for needed relief and support for education while contributing to economic development for the Outer Banks of North Carolina. 100% of net proceeds are split 50/50 by the Dare Education Foundation and the Outer Banks Relief Foundation.

NPS Offers Special Programs to Hatteras Island Kids

Young Naturalists

Hatteras Island is a great place to grow up–beaches, fishing, sea turtles, pirates, shipwrecks, surfing, and, yes, even hurricanes. As a special post-Irene Hatteras Island event, the National Park Service is offering all Hatteras Island kids and their families the opportunity to learn and experience more about this unique barrier island that they call home.

Designed for the children of Hatteras Island, the Especially for Hatteras Island Kids interactive programs are crafted to add to the island youths’ recognition of the many different natural and cultural resources and stories of our nation’s first national seashore.

Join a park ranger for Especially for Hatteras Island Kids programs Monday, September 12th through Friday, September 30th at 4 p.m. daily and additionally at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the pavilion on the grounds of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. All Especially for Hatteras Island Kids programs are free to Hatteras Island kids and their families!

    Evening Campfire

    Time: 8:00pm. Location: Buxton Lifeguarded Beach. -Spend an evening under the stars hearing stories of the Outer Banks. Topics may include shipwrecks, pirates, sea life, and legends. Bring a beach chair, a blanket, flashlight, and bug spray.

    June 29
    Night Lights

    Time: 8:30pm to 9:30pm. Location: Pre-register at Hatteras Island Visitor Center at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. -Join a ranger for a short walk to search the tide line for glowing marine plankton and the sky for planets and constellations. Find out why protecting the dark is valuable to both people and wildlife.

    June 30
    Night Climb
    Time: 8pm and 9pm. Location: Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. -Enjoy a guided tour of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. ..at NIGHT!
    You will need to pre-purchase Night Climb tickets in person between 8:15 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. at the lighthouse ticket booth Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday on the week you intend to climb. Each program is limited to 30 participants and tickets are sold on a first come, first served basis. Tickets are non-refundable and children must be at least 42″ tall. Bring a flashlight!

    The Chicamacomico U.S. Lifesaving Station Summer Programs
    Time: All programs are at 2pm

    Beach Apparatus Drill
    The U.S. Life-Saving Service required all stations to practice this rescue method weekly. Chicamacomico is now one of only two places in the country– and the ONLY one to be performed by active-duty US Coast Guard personnel–that performs the complete Drill. Time: Daily from 4:00pm to 4:30pm. Location: Hatteras Island Visitor Center at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. -In the 1700’s, pirates frequently visited the Outer Banks. Find out why the area was so attractive to pirates and how the golden age of piracy dramatically ended.

Time: 3:30pm to 4:15pm. Location: Hatteras U.S. Weather Bureau Station, in the heart of Hatteras Village. -Join this tour of the restored Hatteras Weather Bureau Station and hear about the villagers who worked there during both tranquil and stormy times.

Graveyard of the Atlantic

Time: 5:00pm to 5:30pm. Location: Hatteras Island Visitor Center at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. -Countless ships have met their end off the Outer Banks. Learn how storms, shoals, war, and commerce have contributed to the wreckage, and hear stories of those who risked their lives to save the victims.

Enjoy an early morning ranger-led walk across the undeveloped ocean beaches of Hatteras Island. Learn about this changing shoreline and the plants and animals that make this dynamic environment their home.

Cast Netting

Time: 9:30am. Location: Pre-register at the Hatteras Island Museum at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. -Casting a net from shore is one of the oldest methods of fishing. Give it a try or just come to observe the action. You’re welcome to bring your own cast net. Wear wading shoes. Limited to 25 participants.

Seashore Arts

Time: 11:00am to 11:30am. Location: Hatteras Island Visitor Center at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. -Get in touch with your artistic side and create a lasting memory of the seashore! Bring a cotton t-shirt or pillow case to create a seashore-inspired masterpiece. Limited to 16 participants.

Coast Guard Station Tour

Time: 3:30pm to 4:30pm. Location: Pre-register at Hatteras Island Visitor Center at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. -The U.S. Coast Guard and its predecessor, the U.S. Life-Saving Service, have a long and heroic history on the Outer Banks. Project to Build Paved Pathways on Hatteras Island

The Dare County Board of Commissioners approved a grant application to fund 7.9 miles of scenic byway. The National Scenic Byways grant is for $1,959,999 and will fund paved pathways in Avon and the tri-villages of Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo. This will become part of the Outer Banks Scenic Byway, highlighting historic village centers, as well as offering a safer route along Highway 12 for runners, walkers and bicyclists. The community has really showed support for this project, from Surf or Sound Realty and other local businesses, to individuals and property owners from 11 states, all making contributions to help fund the off-the-road pathways.
