Buxton Local carving out a name for himself in national surfing contest

Hatteras Island is buzzing about 20-year-old Buxton resident Brett Barley, a local surfer who is making pretty big waves in the surfing world. Currently competing in the Volcom Pipeline Pro contest that is being held in O’ahu, Hawaii’s North Shore, Narley has advanced through three heats to earn a spot in the semifinals.

The third round, fourth round and quarterfinals were completed yesterday in treacherous wave-face heights of 15 to 25 feet at the Banzai Pipeline. Continue reading

East Coast Surfing Championships begin on Hatteras Island

In surfing circles, the popularity of the East Coast Surfing Championships is unparalleled. But when it comes to importance for amateur surfers, the Eastern Surfing Association’s Grand Championships is the highlight of the year, and every year the championship begins on Hatteras Island.

The 42nd Easterns start Monday, September 21, in Buxton near the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on Hatteras Island. The competition continues on the Buxton beach through Saturday. Continue reading
