From January through March, seal sightings are not uncommon on any of the island’s beaches. Taking a break from the rough waves and tricky ocean conditions, the seals literally hurl themselves onto the beach for a little R&R before returning back into the ocean. The Fessenden Center in Buxton has launched a new walking program for islanders, visitors, and homeowners alike to stay fit while enjoying the off-season beauty of Hatteras Island.
Fessenden staff will lead participants who want to stay fit and enjoy the quiet scenery of the island landscape on walks throughout the winter. The “Walk through Winter” program is scheduled three times a week, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1:00 p.m. until about 2:00 p.m. from Dec. 1 through March 20.
