2nd Annual Seal Swim will be March 7

Summer is just around the corner, but cold tolerant locals and visitors have a chance to enjoy a dip in the ocean well before the temperatures heat up.

Local non-profit organization Locomotion, the Cape Hatteras Teen Association, will be hosting its Second Annual Seal Swim on Saturday, March 7, starting at 10 a.m. on the oceanfront behind the Outer Banks Motel on Highway 12 in Buxton. The fundraising event is open to everyone in the community, and both young people and adults can sign up to take the frigid dip in the ocean. Continue reading

The Critters of Winter

While summertime visitors are treated to the laughing gulls, mole crabs, and other coastal critters that enjoy Hatteras Island when it’s warm, winter visitors have an opportunity to observe some of the more timid and elusive Hatteras Island residents. When the beaches and coastal areas are deserted, and when the weather is chilly enough for these cold natured animals to thrive, an unusual group of island critters make a dramatic appearance. Winter Wellness Wednesday is Feb. 11

Need a little Hatteras Island treat to shake off the winter blues? The In Touch Massage & Wellness Center on Highway 12 in Frisco, (adjacent to the Island Perks coffee shop) will host a special Winter Wellness Wednesday event on Feb. 11 from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.

“Walk through Winter” and stay fit well into spring

The Fessenden Center in Buxton has launched a new walking program for islanders, visitors, and homeowners alike to stay fit while enjoying the off-season beauty of Hatteras Island.

Fessenden staff will lead participants who want to stay fit and enjoy the quiet scenery of the island landscape on walks throughout the winter. The “Walk through Winter” program is scheduled three times a week, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1:00 p.m. until about 2:00 p.m. from Dec. 1 through March 20.
